Why would I benefit from counselling?

“Sometimes, just the act of venting is helpful. Counselling provides a safe haven for precisely that kind of free-ranging release: you can say things in the therapist's office, with the therapist present, that would be incendiary or hurtful in your living room”. (Laura Wasser)

Professional counselling and psychotherapy available for all areas of Stockport, Tameside, South Manchester and East Cheshire.

Welcome, and thank you for visiting Valerian Counselling.

Our modern world is complex, busy & constantly changing at the best of times and most of the time we just try to get on with our lives. However, the turbulent times we are currently experiencing have stopped most people in their tracks. Events and crises on not just our day-to-day lives but also on an international & global level are having significant impacts on all of us. The resultant persistent uncertainty and unpredictability in our lives can lead to abnormally raised levels of anxiety, insecurity and fear. At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, these were likely to arise from fear for your health and those close to you, the grief arising from bereavement, the strain of social isolation and the financial consequences of unemployment and loss of financial security. Many are still trying to cope with the social and financial aftermath of the pandemic, without the additional burden of the current cost of living crisis resulting directly or indirectly by the war in Ukraine.

You are in acute need of support but perhaps feel you can't turn to your family, friends or colleagues because you're embarrassed, think they may not understand or because you think they may also be struggling with their own pressures and stress and you don't want to burden them further.

If so, I believe that counselling would be of real benefit to you. Counselling provides an opportunity to explore feelings, values and purpose in a safe, confidential setting. At its best, counselling can help you to experience more meaning, contentment and fulfilment in life - it's always a good time to talk.

I'm Rory and I can offer you the opportunity to be heard, taken seriously and receive empathic focussed attention without being judged or labelled. This may be a question of zooming out to get your issues in perspective or perhaps zooming in to see the causes of your problem(s) in detail. With your consent, I may invite you to connect with thoughts and feelings that you may have previously overlooked (or avoided), give you encouragement to do things differently, note the results and apply what you have learned about yourself.

I am a Registered, Accredited Member of the BACP (British Association for Counsellors & Psychotherapists) and I work with individuals on an open-ended basis or for an agreed time period, with the aim of enabling you to enhance your life and to live it more fully.

What issues can counselling help with?
